One of the first questions people ask when they need a safety certificate is "how much does it cost?" The answer depends on a few factors — vehicle type, provider, and whether you're going mobile or to a workshop. Here's a straightforward breakdown.
What Affects the Price?
Vehicle Type
Different vehicle types have different inspection requirements, which is reflected in pricing:
- Cars and SUVs — standard inspection covering all major systems
- Motorcycles and scooters — slightly different checklist, typically similar pricing to cars
- Trailers and caravans — generally lower cost as they have fewer systems to inspect (no engine, no brakes on smaller trailers)
- Vans and utes — inspected as light vehicles, standard pricing applies
Mobile vs Workshop
Many people assume going to a workshop is cheaper. That's not always the case when you factor in the full picture:
- Workshop: you pay for the inspection, plus time and cost to get the vehicle there and collect it
- Mobile: we come to you — no tow truck, no Uber, no time off work
For the majority of SEQ residents, mobile inspections work out to be equal or better value when total cost (time + money) is considered.
What's Included
A legitimate safety certificate inspection should always include:
- Full inspection by a licensed AIS inspector
- The official Safety Inspection Certificate document (emailed digitally in most cases)
- A written report of any defects found
Watch out for providers who advertise very low prices and then add fees for "administration" or "certificate issuance" — the certificate is part of the inspection, not an extra.
Does Queensland Have a Fixed Price for Safety Certificates?
No. Unlike some states, Queensland doesn't set a government-mandated price for safety certificate inspections. Providers set their own rates, which is why prices vary. What is regulated is who can issue them — only licensed AIS stations.
What Does Tick It Roadworthies Charge?
Our pricing is transparent and shown in full on our booking system — what you see is exactly what you pay, with no surprises. We don't add fees for callouts within our service area. Book online to see current pricing for your vehicle type.
💡 We don't do repairs, which means there's no conflict of interest. We won't fail your car to drum up workshop business — it's in our interest to give you an honest assessment, nothing more.
Is a Cheap Safety Certificate Worth It?
Safety certificates are a legal document. An inspection from an unlicensed provider has zero legal standing — the transfer of registration simply won't go through. Always check that any provider you use holds a current AIS licence number from the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads.
Beyond legality, a thorough inspection is genuinely useful — it tells you the actual condition of the vehicle, whether you're selling or buying.
